Anal Dysplasia Screening and Traditional High-Resolution Anoscopy

Anal intraepithelial neoplasia lesions may convert to anal cancer over a long period of time. For this reason, the colorectal surgeon can often diagnose and treat anal lesions in a precancerous phase.

Pap test

The first screening for squamous cell cancer of the anus is done with an anal Pap test.
However, Pap test sensitivity only detects about 80% of anal lesions.

Therefore, if the Pap test is positive to high grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (H-SIL) or presents suspicious results for atypical squamous cells (ASC-US and ASC-H), a High-Resolution Anoscopy (HRA) is required.

High-Resolution Anoscopy (HRA)

HRA has high diagnostic sensitivity and allows to diagnosis of the vast majority of anal intraepithelial neoplasia lesions in an early stage. Early screening of anal cancer significantly reduces the incidence of advanced disease and the need for invasive procedures. For this reason, diagnosis and prevention play a fundamental role in the management of anal cancer and of its precursor lesions, also known as anal dysplasia.

Currently, High-resolution anoscopy (HRA) is one of the most effective test for the screening and treatment of anal intraepithelial lesions and in particular of anal cancer.

Unfortunately, the low number of high-Resolution anoscopy providers makes testing not easily accessible to high risk populations.

Furthermore, traditional high-resolution anoscopy presents several issues that make this test difficult and expensive for most colorectal centers.

Traditionally HRA requires a colposcope, a piece of complex and bulky equipment originally developed for the diagnosis of cervical cancer.

New possible approaches to High-Resolution Anoscopy: THD® ProctoStation HRA Module and THD® HRStation

Today new possible approaches offer a solution to overcome limits associated with the use of other technologies: THD® ProctoStation HRA Module and THD® HRStation.

THD® ProctoStation HRA Module

The integrated proctological platform THD® ProctoStation includes a compact HRA Module to perform High-Resolution Anoscopy. It is available in a complete package providing high-definition images of the anal canal and the anorectal junction. THD® Light-Scope Procto HRA completes THD® ProctoStation HRA Module, eliminating the need for external light sources.

THD® HRStation

THD® HRStation is the ultimate system with a compact and innovative design for the screening and treatment of precancerous lesions of the anus.

The adjustable setting of contrast agents optimizes image after administration of Lugol (or acetic acid), thus highlighting the lesions, which are visible with magnification. During the examination it is indeed possible to enlarge and magnify the view, going from a standard vision of 19X to 39X, up to 58X so as to highlight even minimal lesions.

THD® HRStation compact design allows the specialist to perform examinations and procedures even where space is at premium. Furthermore, examinations can be performed with the patient in different positions (lateral decubitus, prone or dorsal lithotomy position).
