What is THD® hemorrhoid surgery?

Today technological and medical research has made available an alternative patient-friendly surgical treatment for hemorrhoids: THD® Doppler procedure.

THD® Doppler Method is an advanced surgical technique for hemorrhoid treatment, whose main benefit is keeping anorectal anatomy preserved without the removal of hemorrhoids.

During this procedure, the colorectal surgeon ligates vessels that bring arterial blood to hemorrhoids, reducing excessive blood flow. This ligation occurs in an area less sensitive to pain and is then followed by the repositioning of prolapsed hemorrhoids at their original site.

Results achieved using THD® Doppler method have led to a growing number of surgeons offering THD to an increasing number of patients.

How is THD® hemorrhoid procedure performed?

The colorectal surgeon performs THD® Doppler procedure by using a special anoscope and a Doppler probe. The Doppler signal makes it possible for the surgeon to precisely locate hemorrhoids arterial vessels and ligate them, reducing excessive blood flow to hemorrhoid cushions.

If hemorrhoids are prolapsed outside the anus, the surgeon performs a mucopexy, by repositioning the hemorrhoidal mucosa in its original position.

The entire procedure is performed in an area with no pain receptors and takes about 30 minutes. Since it is a day-surgery, hospitalization is not usually required.

When is THD® hemorrhoid treatment indicated?

THD® Doppler procedure is indicated for internal hemorrhoids that have not responded to conservative or topical treatments. Based on clinical evidence, the THD® Doppler procedure achieves good results for all grades of hemorrhoids and is effective in treating prolapsed hemorrhoids.

Nevertheless, only the colorectal specialist can decide whether it is necessary to perform this procedure, by conducting a colorectal examination.

THD hemorrhoid surgery: before and after

  • Before
Since the procedure is performed in the anal canal, the surgeon usually prescribes one or two enemas before surgery.
  • After
After THD hemorrhoid surgery, patients usually experience considerable pain reduction without serious complications compared to other hemorrhoid treatments.
The patient may feel some discomfort in the area that should subside within a few days. If needed, the surgeon may prescribe pain medication to keep the pain under control. Light bleeding may also occur immediately after surgery and generally stops after a few hours.
  • Another temporary condition that may arise is an urgent need to defecate even in the absence of feces, which is associated with prolapse repair.
THD hemorrhoid surgery recovery is generally quick and patients can usually return to their normal activities within a few days.
In most cases, the THD procedure can be considered a permanent solution to hemorrhoidal disease since relapses are very rare.

THD® hemorrhoid surgery: benefits

THD® Doppler surgery offers many benefits to patients, in particular:

  • maintains the patient's anatomy and the physiology of the anorectal region
  • minimal pain and discomfort both during and after surgery
  • quick recovery and quick return to normal activities
  • rare relapses
  • effective results on both causes and symptoms of hemorrhoidal disease
